Budapest Blues–Two Thumbs Up?

I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Budapest, so when I decided to do this trip I added it with no second thoughts.  Unfortunately, 5 months of traveling around, followed by the most spectacular road trip of all time and a weekend of near death in Berlin left me incredibly exhausted by the thought of another big city.  But we went for it…I couldn’t pass up a 227 to $1 exchange rate!

Unfortunately, trying to force it was a bad idea.  Katie and I were both too tired to enjoy this culturally and historically rich, beautiful city.  We spent the days walking around, but not really taking the time to see the things you should see while you’re in Budapest.  To be fair, I ate a ton of really delicious food, so for that reason I’m so glad we went. Also, a 20 year old Swedish boy fell in love with Katie, leaving her flowers by her bed in the middle of the night.  I’m not sure if that’s cute or creepy, so you decide, but it was definitely hilarious.

The one thing that I would definitely recommend is going to a ruin pub while in Budapest.  We went to one called Szimpla, and it was SO cool.  They are large spaces just filled with weird stuff, and I loved it!

And now for possibly the best story of my entire trip.  While at Szimpla, we met two Russians living in Budapest.  One of them was chatting up Katie… HARD.  But she wasn’t having it.  So, when we finally made our break and got back to the hostel, Katie said, “I’ve only ever read about this…but did you see his thumb?”  I’m not sure what I was expecting her to say, but it definitely wasn’t this.  She said, “It was a toe.” “It was a what?” I said.  “A toe. And his other thumb was a finger!  I only noticed it when he started scrolling through his pictures on his iPhone!” Even writing this, I’m cracking up laughing, and Katie is reading over my shoulder cracking up laughing.  But that night, we laughed like we had never laughed before. I was crying, we almost couldn’t make it up the stairs.  Now, I’ll leave you with this… if he had all of his other fingers, whose finger was it that made up his second thumb?
